Always dial 911 if there is threat of suicide or of violence or harm to self or others. Always explain that the situation involves mental illness and request a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officer. CIT officers are trained in mental health de-escalation techniques to assist individuals affected by mental illness and their families.

Akeela, Inc. is a non-profit organization offering a comprehensive array of services for the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, and alcohol abuse, in Anchorage, Alaska and communities throughout the state. Akeela was founded in 1974 by a group of concerned citizens and serves the community by striving to “enhance the ability of citizens and their families to succeed in life.” All rehab program components are licensed by the Alaska division of Behavioral Health and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitative Facilities.

Provides assessment, placement, detoxification (8 beds), outpatient treatment, and residential treatment ranging from 28 to 180 days. Treatment programs are available for men or women; as well as vocational services, and referrals. Services are also offered to duallydiagnosed psychiatric clients who are men or women over 18 years of age. Telephone assessments are available to remote areas. Different types of residential substance abuse treatment programs are offered to meet differing client needs as determined by an Assessment Counselor.

Genesis House treatment facility provides residential facilities for men recovering from substance abuse. A 20-bed halfway house offers counseling in addition to housing and meals for an average length of stay of three to six months. Fees are negotiable. Two other adjacent rental facilities are available, one with six (6) beds and the other with 12, operate as "dry houses" in which men may work and reside for extended periods of time in a sober living environment.

Stepping Stones is a 9 to 12 month long residential treatment program for mothers with substance use disorders meeting the ASAM criteria for level III.5.  Stepping Stones provides apartment style residences for mothers to live in with their children while receiving a minimum of 20 hours per week of substance use disorder treatment.  As a family-centered treatment program a range of services including; substance use counseling, children’s services, case management, parenting education, employment/vocational assistance, and mental health services are provided within a modified Therapeutic Community.  On-site child development program provides age appropriate childcare facilities as well as psychotherapy services for children and their families.
